Ammonite’s purpose and mission is to bridge the environmental-economic gap of sustainability by developing innovative solutions and projects, through leveraging sustainability-related incentives, finance tools, environmental credits, and general environmental advisory.

We are positioned to be a leading advisory and project development organisation in this context. Collectively our team has more than 20 years of experience in sustainable finance, environmental credits, and circular economy both in an advisory and project development context.

The company was founded with agility and innovation at its core, in order to support a quickly changing and ever challenging environmental and economic landscape. Ammonite Environmental is passionate about finding the environmental credit levers (such as carbon and plastic credits) and accessing other sustainable finance incentives that enable sustainable project development.

Aeren is the founder and director of Ammonite Environmental. He is passionate about environmental credits, carbon emissions, renewable energy and ESG.

Mike Nicholls | Director

Mike is a leading waste management professional and considered one of the top technical waste experts in South Africa.

Mike is a leading waste management professional and considered one of the top technical waste experts in South Africa. As an example of leading industry change, In 2014 Mike catalysed the genesis of the Refuse Derived Fuels Market in South Africa by introducing a unique model which has been recognized internationally and awarded for its innovative approach in developing economies. Apart from being a director of Ammonite, Mike is also the founder of Waste-X, who’s mission is the resourcing of industry from waste, and Co-founder of The RDF Group, a specialist in alternative fuels and waste to energy project developer.

Sashin Singh

Sashin is an Environmental Science graduate and Intern Environmental Scientist with a growing interest in environmental compliance, waste management, and sustainability. He supports environmental projects through research, regulatory assessments, and technical reporting, while continuing to develop his expertise in environmental legislation and sustainable resource management.

Jenine de Wet is a Project Manager at Ammonite Environmental. She manages carbon credit projects from planning through to delivery — coordinating timelines, budgets, and stakeholders including technical specialists and registries such as Verra.

Aeren Young | Founder

Aeren’s mission in life is to bridge the environmental-economic gap of sustainability through the tangible development and implementation of pro-sustainability projects, leveraging his Consulting and Advisory expertise to do so. As a key focus area, he has experience in pulling Environmental Credit Levers (such as carbon and plastic credits) and assisting clients in accessing other sustainable Finance Incentives. Aeren holds an MBA from WITS University and a BSc Hons from Rhodes University.

Mike Nicholls | Director

Mike is a leading waste management professional and considered one of the top technical waste experts in South Africa. As an example of leading industry change, In 2014 Mike catalysed the genesis of the Refuse Derived Fuels Market in South Africa by introducing a unique model which has been recognized internationally and awarded for its innovative approach in developing economies. Apart from being a director of Ammonite, Mike is also the founder of Waste-X, who’s mission is the resourcing of  industry from waste, and Co-founder of The RDF Group, a specialist in alternative fuels and waste to energy project developer.
 
Mike started his entrepreneurial career by founding Ex-Waste in 2000 as a joint venture with Interwaste, now one of the biggest waste management companies in Africa. Interwaste listed on the South African AltX Exchange in 2007 and Ex-Waste was bundled into the listing. In 2014 the company migrated to the main board of the JSE. In 2019 the entity was delisted and sold to Seche Environment. During the period  2007 – 2023, Mike served as Technical and R&D Director for the Interwaste group of companies. He was responsible for driving the waste management solutions for the group.
Mike has had an impactful career in valorising waste and is a specialist in this field. Mike has a wealth of experience, and leads with an innovative approach to solving problems. Lastly, Mike and is very well connected to broader industry and has developed significant relationships with the Regulators in South Africa.

Chris Ranking | Lead Consultant

With several years of experience in environmental sciences and sustainability, Chris has developed experience in delivering projects on; GHG Accounting, Carbon Tax Advisory, Air Quality Impact Assessments, Compliance Audits, Waste Management Plans, Emissions Monitoring, Climate Impact Assessments, ESG Advisory Initiatives, Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Carbon Footprint Analyses, and Energy Performance Certificates. Chris holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand. Chris is also currently pursuing a PhD in Climate Change at the University of Pretoria. His research examines the impact of climate change on maize production in the North West Province of South Africa.

Marvel Owino | Carbon Specialist

Marvel is a sustainability professional specialising in carbon management and ESG integration. With an ESG certification from Cambridge and an MSc in Carbon Management from the University of Edinburgh, she is a specialist in supporting businesses in carbon accounting, ESG due diligence, and developing carbon credit projects across all industries. Marvel is focused on developing projects for Ammonite Environmental both in East Africa and South Africa.

Sajini Patel | Senior Manager

Sajini Patel G is a dedicated environmental scientist and senior carbon researcher, now serving as Principal Consultant at Ammonite Environmental, where she spearheads greenhouse gas mitigation initiatives across waste management, agroforestry, biochar domains amongst others. With over eight years of progressive experience in sustainability and climate-change mitigation, and an additional four years of scientific research, Sajini has cultivated deep expertise in GHG mitigation projects, Article 6-aligned methodologies, and international carbon market mechanisms.

Previously, Sajini led methodology development, advocacy, and business development while serving as Technical Manager at the GHR Registry, where she contributed to pioneering global standards addressing Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) such as methane and black carbon. Her work reflects a strong balance between technical rigor and human-centered purpose, guided by her scientific training in Environmental and Life Sciences at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Throughout her career, Sajini has collaborated with public and private entities worldwide, championing innovation and integrity in the carbon market. She has contributed to diverse climate initiatives, including nature-based solutions, renewable energy, waste-to-value systems, and carbon sequestration research. Known for her thoughtful leadership, cross-cultural communication, and commitment to authentic impact, Sajini believes that collaboration and compassion are the true catalysts for sustainable transformation. Her mission remains rooted in ensuring that climate action is not just effective but also equitable, truthful, and enduring for generations to come.

Sashin Singh | Intern Environmental Scientist

Sashin is an Environmental Science graduate and Intern Environmental Scientist with a growing interest in environmental compliance, waste management, and sustainability. He supports environmental projects through research, regulatory assessments, and technical reporting, while continuing to develop his expertise in environmental legislation and sustainable resource management.

Jenine de Wet | Project Manager

 Jenine de Wet is a Project Manager at Ammonite Environmental. She manages carbon credit projects from planning through to delivery — coordinating timelines, budgets, and stakeholders including technical specialists and registries such as Verra.
She joined carbon markets in 2019, where she developed a land sector project, traded carbon credits, and led in-country operations for an international business. Before that, she worked in operations and logistics management roles. She holds diplomas in International Trade and in Logistics & Supply Chain Management.
